How to waste less food and keep it delicious for longer

Use the freezer, use better packaging, drying

For root vegetables, tubers etc: Around 12-16 °C, dark and ideally not too humid.

For highly respiring vegetables and leafy greens: High humidity and temperature around 3-4 °C.

For dried products: Low humidity, ideally dark and not to warm.

Preservation method for fruits, berries and vegetables: Can be done in air, in the sun, in an oven, in a food dehydrator or by freeze drying.

Freezing in an airtight bag is better than no packaging, freezing in vacuum is even better. Vacuum packaging prevents freezer burn.

Many of the things on the list could be saved by food preservation techniques in different ways.

What will you store in your fridge freezer?

Fresh fruit and vegetables – Look for fridges with salad crispers and deep drawers for large vegetables. If you have a lot of fresh food you may want a larger fridge compartment than freezer.

Meat and fish – A model with an Extra-fresh compartment will keep meat and fish fresher for longer.

Drinks – Consider wine racks, adjustable shelves to fit bottles or even a built-in wine cooler. Some American style fridge freezers have an ice dispenser on the door for cooling your drinks.

Frozen foods – If you tend to freeze a lot of food, consider a fridge freezer with an equal freezer capacity to the fridge.
